Best Sixth Form Chemist 2014

Last week, Ms Travis, Rebecca and her father, went to the University of Reading to attend the Society of Chemical Industry, SCI Thames and Kennet Best Sixth Form Chemist 2014.

Every year this award is organised by SCI and it is designed to recognise talent and enthusiasm for the subject amongst sixth formers in the region. This year Rebecca was nominated from Tormead to win the prize.

First we were given some very interesting talks about what studying Food and Nutrition at Reading would involve, how scientific it is and how much it relies on Chemistry especially Organic and Analytical techniques. To study this requires ABB and at least two science subjects at A2.

We were then given an excellent tour of the School of Chemistry, Food & Pharmacy. We saw where volunteers come to be fed and sampled and where they test the bowel and food samples! We heard a lot about chocolate, sausages and rocket. The pilot plant is where students make up different batches to develop new flavours of or even types of food.
