Most girls sit GCSE examinations in 10 subjects.
In the Sixth Form all girls take AS Level examinations in 5 subjects (of which one is General Studies) in the Lower 6 year, dropping to 4 A Levels (of which one is General Studies) in the Upper 6. Some girls continue with all 5 A Levels.
Tormead pupils consistently achieve excellent results in both GCSE and A Level examinations. Independent assessors confirm that their results reflect considerable ‘value added’, compared to results achieved nationally, by students of equivalent ability. Over the past five years the average pass rates have been 100% at A Level (87% at grades A and B) and 100% at GCSE (80% at grades A* and A).
In the 2007 examinations, 24 out of 58 Upper Sixth girls achieved 3 or more A grades at A Level. At GCSE 5 girls gained straight A* in all subjects, and 43 (49%) earned A* or A in all subjects.
Almost all girls leave Tormead to read for degrees at the university of their choice. A growing number of girls elect to defer university entrance for a year, in order to undertake ‘Gap Year’ activities. Several recent leavers have spent their Gap Year engaged in voluntary work overseas, in such activities as working in an orphanage in India, teaching in Nepal, assisting with wildlife conservation in South Africa, and undertaking a conservation project in the cloud forest of north-western Ecuador. |
