Tormead School values the contribution of educational visits to the education of its pupils. Visits may be day or residential, in this country or abroad and may be directly or indirectly supervised. Such visits provide pupils with opportunities for development through learning, discovery, exploration and challenge in ways that cannot be achieved in the classroom.

All visits from Tormead will be conducted in accordance with the set guidelines, which are designed to ensure that such visits occur within a structured and supportive framework. Attention to the safety of all members of any group is of paramount importance and our leaders are experienced, well prepared and well supported both by their party members and by the home duty staff. The leaders in turn have a duty to keep all other members of the group well informed and to ensure that all guidelines are clearly stated and understood by everyone involved.

The Governing Body has overall responsibility for the visits policy which they delegate to the Headmistress. The Headmistress approves the appointment of the Party leader and other accompanying staff.

The Deputy Head (Curriculum) will ensure that all the correct arrangements are in place, including a suitable risk assessment. Suitable contingency plans will be in place for any unexpected situation

The Deputy Head (Pastoral) will ensure (in conjunction with the duty Matron) that the party leader has the necessary pupil medical and contact details, and will arrange a Home Duty officer if needed.

Pupils will be fully briefed about the purpose of the visit and are expected to comply with the School code of conduct at all times and with any special arrangements for the visit. Correct school uniform should be worn for all day trips unless the type of activity precludes it. Informal clothing is usually worn for residential trips, but must be suitable for the activity and comply with usual ‘mufti’ regulations.

Parents will be briefed in advance by the School about all details of the visit. They are expected to ensure that their child is fully prepared for the visit and that they have supplied the School with the necessary up to date health details and emergency contact details.
