The Curriculum
The curriculum of the Junior Department achieves a dichotomy of aims; it ensures that the teachers have high expectations of the girls and that academic standards are high, whilst teaching in a way that quite simply put is ‘fun’. By ensuring that the teaching and learning in the Department is interesting and motivating, the girls are fully focused on their work and quite simply want to learn more. Trips, visits and visiting speakers are a vital part of the curriculum of Tormead Junior Department. Sport is a key part of each girl’s week in Tormead Junior Department. The girls from Pre-prep upwards enjoy lessons taught by specialist games, gymnastics and swimming teachers. Pre-Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 enjoy one games and one gymnastics lesson a week. From Year 3, swimming is added to the girls’ schedule. The extra-curricular programme for sport is extensive. Music plays a very important part in the lives of the girls in the Junior Department. All girls will receive two lessons a week, taught by a music specialist. In Year 2 and 3 this is extended to three lessons a week, to allow the girls to learn the recorder and so have a sound introduction to the reading of music and instrumental playing. The Junior Department is keen to ensure the girls have an understanding and appreciation of community and charity. | |||||||||||||
