Fishbourne Roman Palace was discovered by accident during the digging of a water main trench in 1960. The discovery led to nine seasons of excavations that showed the site had developed from a military base at the time of the Roman invasion in AD43 to a sumptuous Palace by the end of the first century. Between 1995 and 2002, new excavations by the Sussex Archaeological Society revealed exciting new insights into this development of this site, and especially the area in front of the Palace.

Year 3 girls took part in the activity workshop which included:

· Spinning wool

· Using small tiles to create their own mosaic in sand

· Building a Roman archYear 3 girls took part in the activity workshop…..

· Dressing up as a Roman child and slave

· Using a quern stone

· Playing Roman board games

· Discussing how historians have used clues to discover how the Romans lived.

They also watched an audio visual presentation which gives general information about the site, and some footage of the excavation. We visited the museum and got the chance to view, Roman coins, statues, pottery and many other findings. Finally we looked at the remains of the beautiful mosaics that have been excavated.
