15th October 1893 - A page from my Diary
Today I woke up, it was seven o’clock! I had only half an hour to get ready for school. I really wanted the medal, which is given to you if you get to school on time throughout the year. Oh, what joy it would be to wear it! I quickly got dressed when I suddenly realised that my shoes were dirty. Miss Smith doesn’t like dirty shoes. I found the brush and luckily, the mud came off. I arrived at school just as Miss Smith rang the bell. Miss Smith took the register. We then recited our school prayer. After that, we went on to mental arithmetic. I’m not so good at sums. The teacher asked me a question and I had to stand up embarrassed, because I didn’t know the answer. I’m not so keen on Miss Smith because she always makes us feel bad about ourselves.
Unrepentantly, the person I sat next to spilt ink all over my work. I was in for the cane.
‘Tut, tut, Miss Anderson, spilt ink. Do you know what happens to girls who spill ink?’
I shook my head.
‘The cane,’ she said with a smile of a snake on her face. I walked up ashamed. James Underwood and George Williams sniggered as I went up. Four slaps across my hand. It felt like a thousand wasps stinging me all at once. I sat down, I felt awful. I then got the dunce’s cap for slumping at my desk. I was not having a good day so far. I ended up missing some of my favourite subjects, like reading. We then did our drill lesson, the active event! I hated it, as by the end, I was out of breath. The last lesson of the morning was writing. I quite liked doing all the swirls in the copperplate writing and using the dip pens. I have had better days…..
