Chess success at Surrey Megafinal 2013

700 children took part in the Surrey Megafinal over the three days of the May bank holiday weekend. FIVE Tormead girls have qualified for the Southern Regional Gigafinal in July. Congratulations to Sophie, Felicity, Amelia, Eleanor and Jhyni.

Summer term trips

Year 4 travelled to Sayers Croft in Ewhurst for their weekend residential trip. The girls enjoyed activities including a night walk, a campfire, a blindfold trail, problem solving, hazel frames, a history trail and an environmental walk.

While Year 5 travelled to Hindhead for their PGL residential. During the week, the girls enjoyed activities including climbing, abseiling, raft building, the challenge course, orienteering and problem solving.

Although not a residential trip Pre-Prep had a great day in the forest! They managed to collect all the woolly worms in record time and hunted for other mini beasts. They made forest potions and forest pictures as well as jumping over streams and splashing in the puddles and mud!

Osmington Bay 2013

Last week, the Year 6 girls travelled to Osmington Bay.

They studied the geology and geography of the Dorset coastline focusing on Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.

The girls also enjoyed fossil hunting, problem solving, the citizenship game, aeroball, the giant swing, chemistry experiments and computer animation.

Dancing through the Decades

The annual dance exhibition took place in the JCS Auditorium this week.Two evening and one matinee performance of “Dancing Through The Decades” took the packed audience on a rollercoaster trip as each class represented a decade in the Twentieth Century.

6X danced their Charleston to demonstrate the fashion in the 20's.

6Y took us to South America to dance the newfangled (and shocking) Argentine Tango in 1910.

5X made the 1950's Jailhouse Rock.

5Y take us back to the Swinging Sixties with the immortal music of The Beach Boys.

4X ignored the air raid sirens and cheered themselves up by dancing to “In The Mood” by Glen Miller to celebrate the 40's.

4Y show us The Lambeth Walk – the “Gangnam Style” of 30's pre-war London!

3X leapt into action with a medley from “Fame” and “Footloose”. Ah, the 80's and legwarmers....why did they go out of fashion.....?

3Y get their 70's flares on, and made their parents nostalgic with an Abba medley.

During the matinee performance on Thursday the girls from Pre-Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 joined the fun with

Year 2 going back to the first decade of the Twentieth Century, as a class of Edwardian schoolchildren
and Year 1 and Pre-Prep became The Flintstones (Yabba-dabba-doo!) and the King of the Swingers (from The Jungle Book)

Eco Week 2

Eco Week Two was devoted to saving energy and every class was involved.

All the girls had to remember to switch off lights, turn off whiteboards and computers at play time and lunch time too!

The Energy Busters team had charts and checked that energy was being saved.

All girls received stickers for taking part and every class received a certificate too

Planets, powerpoints and professors

One of the highlights of Year 5 is the completion and presentation of their talks about the planets.

The girls were most conscientious in their work preparing not just a talk but a PowerPoint presentation, a poster, models and even costumes.

They also had a visit from the Senior School librarian Mrs Ferns, who explained to the girls how they could search and find the books that they need for their studies as well as reading for pleasure.

Dads and their daughters get gardening

One Saturday in October around 30 girls brought their Dads to school to help plant spring bulbs.

The job was completed in record time with 580 bulbs being planted in 20 minutes!! It was then lovely to see so many Dads in the Junior School Hall chatting whilst their daughters enjoyed some extra playtime.

refreshments.

Surrey Schools' Biathlon 2012

On Sunday 14th October 2012 Tormead hosted the Surrey Schools' Biathlon Competition

We welcomed over 500 competitors from 42 Surrey Schools and the results from the day can be found here.

Year 6 go back in time

This week, Year 6 visited the Victorian Schoolroom in Guildford.

The girls dressed in Victorian costumes, some came as girls, some dressed as boys. During the visit they had a handwriting lesson, an object lesson and also needed to recite a poem. The girls then enjoyed a sewing activity whilst the boys settled to complete a technical drawing task. they then enjoyed a truly Victorian lunch - no crisps or cling film in sight!

After their lunch, the girls spent time playing with some Victorian toys, including hoops and hobby horses.
