The main intake ages are Year 7 - 11+, although we do consider pupils at any stage, depending on the availability of spaces.
You may register your child at any time but, in order to take the entrance examination, the registration form needs to be completed and sent to the Registrar, with the £100 registration fee (cheques payable to Tormead School) by 31st October of the year prior to entry.
Please note that, if your child's assessment is to take place abroad, the registration fee rises to £150.
The entrance examination for Year 7 entry takes place in early January. In addition to the entrance examination outlined below, we will also ask your daughter's current school for a school report.
English
The English Examination is 1 hour long. The examination is divided into two sections; the first section is designed to test the candidate's ability to understand and respond to the content and language of an unseen piece of writing, and the second section is a piece of free writing.
Mathematics
The Mathematics Examination is 1 hour long and is based on the National Curriculum. We expect them to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, simple fractions and decimals. It is important that they are proficient in mental math skills in order to work quickly and correctly, calculators are not allowed in Year 7 tests and examinations. We are looking for girls with the ability to reason and to apply these basic skills in order to solve problems involving, among other things, the use of charts, diagrams and tables.
Reasoning
The 30 minute Reasoning paper may include verbal and/or non verbal reasoning questions
Learning Support
If your daughter has been assessed by an Educational Psychologist, please attach the report to the Registration Form and it will be forwarded to Mrs Jody Odlin, our Head of Learning Support.
Joining Tormead
If your daughter joins us, we try to make her early days as smooth as possible. She will be invited to a New Girls’ Afternoon in July, giving her a chance to meet her Form Tutor and the girls who will be in her form. In September, on the day before the term begins for other pupils, she will attend an Induction Day. Each girl is allocated an Aunt from the current Year 8; who along with The Head of Lower School; Miss Janine Hansen and the Form Tutors will ensure that girls settle easily into the senior school.
Entrance in other years
There may be occasional places available. Enquiries should be made to the Registrar, Mrs Cherry Scott. Applicants will be required to sit an examination in English, Mathematics and a Reasoning paper. Special arrangements may be made for applicants visiting from overseas and it is possible for candidates to sit the entrance examination at their current school (with the school's permission).
