Tormead’s Sixth Form Block provides members of the Sixth Form with purpose-built teaching rooms, a computer study room and a spacious common room. The curriculum offers a wide range of AS and A2 courses, which (subject to demand) can be combined to suit the individual student. Most girls follow four AS courses in the Lower Sixth and three A2 courses in the Upper
Sixth, in addition to General Studies which leads to an additional A Level. AS Levels form an intermediate stage between GCSE and A Level. Each AS subject is studied for 7, and each A2 subject for 8, thirty-five minute periods per week. Wherever possible, each subject is taught by two members of staff, giving different perspectives on the subject. This more adult approach provides a stimulating atmosphere for academic learning.
The following courses are available, subject to demand and timetabling considerations, though others may be available if syllabus and timetable constraints allow. All special requests must be discussed with the Headmistress. Twenty-nine subjects are currently available at AS and A2:
Art (2D or 3D)
Biology
Chemistry
Classical Civilization
Design Technology - Graphics or Resistant Materials

Fieldwork Residential courses are important features of the course for students of Biology and Geography and offer immediacy and relevance to the study of these disciplines in the School. Modern Linguists travel to our associated schools in France, Germany or Spain and, for those seeking practical or professional application of their language skills, work experience can be arranged in France.
Beyond the formal A Level programme we encourage girls to develop a wide range of interests. A non-examined General Studies programme is run in conjunction with the Royal Grammar School and Guildford High School. In addition, the in-house General Studies programme offers a variety of weekly sessions. These may take the form of lectures, where visiting speakers open up a wide variety of subjects to challenge and comment, question and answer sessions with experts, or tutor-led discussion groups. All sixth formers sit the General Studies AS and A Level examinations in addition to their other A Levels. |
