Ceramic Inspiration

Year 11 Art students were lucky enough to be given the chance to attend a series of three after school workshops led by visiting artist Jean Tolkovsky. Jean works locally and produces figurative ceramic pieces, usually of a quirky or whimsical nature. Her work sells work through exhibitions, art events and galleries, and she also participates in the Surrey Open Studios scheme.

Students were given tuition on a range of different techniques; using the same materials that Jean usually works with, the girls created unique ceramic figures. Modelling figures in clay is never easy, but Jean took the students through the process step by step, giving the girls an understanding of how to break the procedure into simple stages. Imagination flourished, as everyone really enjoyed the workshops. The final results consisted of some fantastic, very exciting and individual outcomes. The work produced has made a valuable contribution to the preparatory studies for the girls’ GCSE examination projects based on the topic of ‘Order / Disorder’.

We would like to thank Jean for her time and expertise. Thanks also go to Year 11 for working so hard to get their pieces completed to a high standard.
