Tormead celebrates LGBT History Month with LGBTQIA+ Society Week

In tandem with LGBT History Month, Tormead’s LGBTQIA+ Society organised a week of activities and fundraising events in February, successfully raising significant funds for the Stonewall charity.

“We were delighted that our first LGBTQIA+ Society Week coincided with LGBT History Month. This student-led initiative raised over £2000 for the charity Stonewall, a fantastic result and a testament to the phenomenal effort by those involved,” said Mrs Samantha Jones, Assistant Head: Adventure & Service.

During the week, a variety of remotely-conducted talks and activities promoted inclusivity in the school and wider community. Fundraising events included a 12-hour Zoom Dance Party and a Rainbow Mufti Day. Art and Cake Decorating Competitions, both on the theme of inclusion, saw many creative entries from girls in all years. Upper School girls were invited to attend multiple talks on a variety of related topics, including:

  • ‘The Importance of LGBTQIA+ Characters in TV media in the construction
of our identities’ by Emily Trivette
  • ‘Becoming an Activist’ by Xavier White
  • ‘Section 28 talk’ by Tormead’s Mr Breslin
  • ‘Intersex life in the 21st century Britain’ by Sara Gillingham
