At Tormead, we believe that education is about more than grades. For us, it is about developing the skills, attitudes and habits that prepare young people for a rapidly changing world; to know what to do; and to have the skills and resilience to persevere when they do not know what to do.
We, of course, want every student to flourish, but not just for exams. Our ACHIEVE approach, inspired by the work of educationalists Bill Lucas and Guy Claxton, focuses on seven key characteristics that help students become confident, capable and curious learners.

Ambitious learners set themselves high, realistic goals and take pride in doing their best. They focus on quality, refining and persevering until their work meets the highest standards.
Collaborative learners work well in teams, listening, respecting different views, and sharing responsibilities. They resolve disagreements constructively and value the ideas that come from working together.
Hardy learners approach challenges with confidence, optimism and resilience. They learn from setbacks, embrace feedback, and support others while developing their skills and character.
Involved learners express themselves clearly and listen attentively. They adapt their communication to different audiences, engage thoughtfully, and use interaction to deepen understanding.
Enquiring learners are curious and ask questions to understand the world. They think critically, explore beyond expectations, and use creativity to discover connections and solutions.
Visionary learners think beyond the obvious, imagining new possibilities and taking thoughtful risks. They embrace change, work with others, and approach problems creatively to innovate.
Evolving learners persevere through challenges, staying disciplined and motivated. They learn from setbacks, adapt to change, and build resilience to succeed over the long term.
This framework is woven into all we do, from the way lessons are taught, the homework that is set, the guidance for parents and how we celebrate progress and success.

Our highly skilled and passionate teachers do more than deliver content; they empower pupils to become independent, capable thinkers. Working in state-of-the-art facilities, our staff continually develop their own practice, ensuring that lessons are dynamic, relevant, and rooted in the ACHIEVE ethos.
Whether in our fully equipped science labs, bright art studios, cutting-edge technology suites, or modern languages classrooms, students benefit from an inspiring learning environment that supports creativity, exploration, and academic rigour.
We nurture happy, confident learners by inspiring curiosity rather than applying pressure. By fostering a hunger for knowledge and encouraging students to ask “why” and “how,” we cultivate a love of learning that goes beyond exam specifications. We are open with students about the challenges of each subject, recognising that true understanding may take several attempts, and we use this approach to build resilience and a determination to persevere.
Our outstanding GCSE and A-Level results reflect a philosophy that values deep understanding, personal growth, and individuality over rote learning or rigid, one-size-fits-all teaching. This approach resonates with students, guiding them towards the excellent outcomes they deserve. It is central to the Tormead philosophy: we work alongside our students to achieve their best, earning high results as they are, rather than shaping them to fit an institution or a predetermined model of success.
From the start of Year 7, pupils are immersed in a rich and varied curriculum, taught by subject specialists who bring passion, energy, and creativity to every lesson. Lessons come alive through real-world connections, hands-on experiences, and exciting content across:
We take a hybrid approach to learning, combining textbooks and digital tools to balance traditional methods with future-ready technology to help students become agile learners in an ever-evolving world.

We do not believe classrooms should be conveyor belts of content. Instead, using our ACHIEVE framework, we encourage students to:
Learning is active, interactive, and designed to spark curiosity.
Homework is designed to support what is happening in the classroom to consolidate knowledge, improve recall, and deepen understanding. We use Satchel: One, an intuitive online platform that helps pupils organise their tasks and deadlines, while developing essential time management and independent study skills.
Parents can also access Satchel: One to stay connected and support their child’s learning journey.
Academic learning is only part of the picture. We also offer an incredible range of extracurricular opportunities, with over 150 clubs available during the Autumn Term alone.
These include:
These clubs provide the space for students to ignite passions, build friendships, and explore interests beyond the classroom.
All schools have lessons. All schools have curriculums. All schools set homework. But Tormead is about discovering who you are, finding what excites you, and having the support to grow into the person you are meant to be, the person you want to be.
We cannot wait to see how you will ACHIEVE, and we hope this page has given you a glimpse into the vibrant, challenging, and welcoming community that could soon be yours.

Tormead School is where girls thrive, thanks to our value-added education which focuses on each girl as an individual. Our latest ISI inspection in October 2024 commended our supportive and nurturing environment which enables pupils’ academic and emotional growth. We would be delighted to welcome you to one of our forthcoming Open Events to meet our Heads, David Boyd and Nicki Fry (Head of Prep School) and hear from our girls as they explain what they like best about Tormead.
