    Playground

A canopied outdoor play area serves girls in Reception to Year 2, with an adjacent area that is fondly known as Tormead’s equivalent to ‘Teletubby land’, including an insect farm and fun water features. Years 3 – 6 have access to the new Gym Trail, outdoor amphitheatre and lots of outdoor games that can be played on the open court space.

    Music Suite

A variety of musical instruments are available in the music suite, where girls can explore and enhance their musical understanding. Access to the Senior School performing arts building allows for numerous practice rooms for private tuition.

Music plays an important part in the lives of the Prep School girls. Whilst some of our girls go on to become highly-accomplished musicians, we aim for all to be musically literate and at ease with the subject, able to use performance skills in other areas of life. All girls have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, to take part in group work and to sing in choirs.

    Science Laboratories

There are multiple purpose-built science laboratories, which include specialist equipment for all three disciplines: biology, chemistry and physics.

    Biology

There are two purpose-built Biology labs with an extensive range of equipment allowing for microscopy, microbiology, forensic and dissection practicals, to name but a few. Anatomical models adorn the walls, along with exemplar pieces of student work. Both labs facilitate start-of-the-art technologies with new large touch sensitive whiteboards and the ability to air-play from wireless devices. The cupboards are stocked with apparatus used to teach human and plant biology, and the adjacent Biology Prep room ensures that equipment for the girls is always well-maintained. A dedicated Biology Pond has been installed on the lower floor beneath the labs, with an indoor quiet working area, and a stunning outdoor pond homing a number of koi carp. A section of the pond has been specially built to cater for sampling investigations.

    Chemistry

There are two dedicated Chemistry labs which are fully-equipped for a range of core and super-curricular practical demonstrations and activities. Both rooms are fitted throughout with gas and water, allowing individual or pair execution of more complex organic preparations. There are two fume cupboards in both rooms, which enable safe working and more complex demonstrations. Chemistry is supported by an extensive range of practical equipment and a comprehensive chemical store. Labs are equipped with touch-sensitive whiteboards, allowing for interactive and collaborative working.

    Physics

The two dedicated Physics labs are fitted with high quality level low-vibration wooden bench-tops, essential for making accurate measurements during experimental work. In addition to having large write-on whiteboards necessary for detailed diagrams and mathematical proofs, both labs have recently been fitted with high-quality interactive screens for projection and creation of notes, playing videos and sharing pupil’s work on their iPads with the class.

The Physics Department is well-equipped with all the equipment necessary for pupils to perform experiments and practical investigations in pairs up to IGCSE and working individually at A Level and more. We also have many data-logging measuring devices which can be connected to the department’s laptops or to pupils’ iPads via Bluetooth connections. An extensive collection of apparatus is available for use by teachers to demonstrate Physics principles.

The Physics Laboratories are supported by a dedicated Physics Technician’s Prep Room in which equipment can be prepared, maintained and fabricated.

    Lower School Science Lab

One of the science laboratories is fitted out to be especially suitable for the teaching of all three sciences to Lower School pupils. The layout of benching is designed to promote collaborative work and the apparatus which is used most by these year groups is stored locally. The addition of a high-quality interactive screen allows for projection and creation of notes, playing videos and sharing pupil’s work on their iPads with the class.

This laboratory is supported by a dedicated Lower School Science Technician’s Prep. Room in which equipment and materials can be prepared and washed.

    Science Computer Room

The Science Computer Room is equipped with 12 pupil Mac desktop computers (which can also be run to emulate MS Windows). This room is used for the teaching of Computer Science, Astronomy software-based and imaging work and holding smaller, seminar-style lessons and break-out sessions, particularly with Sixth Form pupils.

    Multi-purpose Science Lab

Another of our science labs is equipped with a combination of movable and fixed benching to enable it to be used flexibly for the teaching of any of the three sciences. There is stock of basic apparatus in the room and other equipment is provided as necessary for each lesson. It has recently been fitted with a high-quality interactive screen for projection and creation of notes, playing videos and sharing pupil’s work on their iPads with the class.

Sixth Form Common Room & Cafe

Sixth Form is a time of unparalleled growth, fun and hard work! Our aim is to foster intellectual curiosity and engagement with academic work, whilst educating girls for life beyond Sixth Form.

The Sixth Form Common Room and Cafe provide a comfortable, relaxed environment for the girls to meet, discuss, plan, socialise or simply recharge before the next lesson or activity. The large, airy space includes multiple seating areas, from sofas to high-tables to a cafe, as well as a balcony overlooking the campus. Biometric technology for signing in and out maintains safeguarding while simultaneously providing the older girls with a bit more independence and freedom to manage their own time.

    Art & Textiles studios

There are 3 purpose-built Art & Textiles studios, including a bespoke studio for our A-level students and a Kiln for our budding pottery enthusiasts. All students receive Art and Textiles lessons in Years 7 and 8, and Art becomes optional from Year 9 upwards, allowing students to focus on the subject in more depth. GCSE and A Level courses in Art and design champion individuality of approach and bring students’ own interests and ideas to the fore. There is a wide range of Art-based extracurricular activities and clubs that are available to everyone who wishes to be involved.

    Library

Set in the heart of the school, the library occupies a spacious, airy room, providing a pleasant quiet study or reading area for individuals and class visits. There is seated space for 50 downstairs and a further 45 girls in the mezzanine Sixth Form Private Study area.

With a large, up-to-date and well-maintained stock of 10,000 non-fiction books, 33 journals and magazines, plus two qualified library staff, the library provides the opportunity and resources for all our girls to develop and use their independent learning skills. A tempting and diverse collection of 7000 fiction books (as well as access to the Listening Books Library and a growing online e-book collection) promote the enjoyment of reading from Year 6 to adults.

    Gymnasium

The gymnasts are very fortunate to train on one of only four Olympic sprung floors within school settings. With access to first-class coaching and phenomenal facilities, the girls have gained the title of British Champions at every age group. The real success in the gym however, is measured by the number of girls wanting to participate at all levels and simply for fun!

    Sports Centre

In addition to enjoyment, sport promotes physical fitness, coordination, teamwork and social skills, the ability to win and to lose graciously, along with the opportunity to compete. We encourage every girl to participate and make her contribution, to build self esteem as well as a sense of achievement and school spirit. Our teams regularly achieve success at local, county, regional and national level.

Sports facilities onsite include tennis and netball courts and a well-equipped Sports Hall with a sprung gymnasium floor. We also train at Surrey Sports Park for swimming, hockey, netball and Senior Games.

Performing Arts Centre – Music Suite

Music plays a major part in the wider life of the school through timetabled lessons and includes the option to study for GCSE and A Level, as well as a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities. Music is taught in purpose-built music classrooms, one of which contains a suite of Mac computers with Logic, Sibelius and GarageBand software. Individual music lesson and practice rooms complete the facilities on offer to all girls.

Some 150 girls take part in musical performances during the course of the year. These range from informal lunchtime concerts to major musical events, held both in and out of school. The Music Department has excellent relationships with a wide variety of venues and professional musical groups and we are always looking to build on these still further. In recent times members of the Chamber Choir and the Symphony Orchestra have participated in professional recordings in a studio in Islington.
