We recognise that choosing the right school for your daughter is an important decision. To aid you through that process, here are answers to some of the most Frequently Asked Questions. Please feel free to contact our Admissions team with any further queries you may have at firstname.lastname@example.org
The standard points of entry to Tormead are September entry into Reception (4+), Year 3 (7+), Year 7 (11+) and Sixth Form (16+).
Occasional places may exist for other ages, in other year groups. However, as places are limited, entry at these non-standard points can be highly competitive. For families relocating into the area, we may be able to offer places at other points in the year on an ad-hoc basis. To register your interest in an occasional place, please contact the Registrar, Mrs Melanie Hobdey, email@example.com.
** Please note: the entrance assessments and dates for 11+ 2022 Entry are altered for this year, and differ from the information below. Please check the ‘How to Apply, Senior’ page for more details.**
For entrance to Reception class, girls visit for an hour-long informal assessment, which takes place in small groups within a classroom setting and is aimed at establishing how easily girls will transition to a school environment. This visit is held each November for entry the following September.
For all other year groups, Entrance Assessments are held in January for entry the following September. More information is available on the Admissions page.
Additionally, should occasional places exist in other year groups, we hold Entrance Assessments for girls looking to join at non-standard entry points in the Prep School (Years 1-6) or the Senior School (Years 8-10) the following September.
Sixth Form entrance is based upon a combination of interviews and references taken up in November and the subsequent IGCSE/GCSE examination results.
The first step is to visit Tormead on one of our Open Mornings, where you will meet our Head, Mr David Boyd, tour our school (either in person or virtually), chat to staff and pupils and ask any questions you may have.
To begin the application process, complete the Online Registration Form (a non-refundable £100 registration fee is applicable). A Registration Form is available here. Applications can be made at any point: we do not take the date of registration into consideration when making offers. The Registration Deadline for entry the following September is 31 October.
Entrance to Tormead is by academic selection and all registered candidates are invited to attend our Entrance Assessments in November (Reception and Sixth Form) or January (Years 1 – 10). An examination pack with all the details of these assessments is sent to registered families in mid-October. Ahead of any entrance examination, we will ask each candidate’s current school for a written report indicating academic progress, future potential and other talents.
We aim to notify all candidates of the outcome of their assessment within two weeks, regardless of the outcome. Where girls have met the academic entrance criteria, but insufficient places are available, we may place their name on our Waiting List in the first instance.
Guildford is easily accessible by both road and rail and our girls travel to school from the many towns and villages throughout Surrey. The school is a short walk from London Road Station and many Senior School girls travel by train.
In addition, Tormead has a dedicated coach service bringing girls of all ages from Camberley, Cobham, Esher, Farnham, Godalming, Haslemere, Walton, Weybridge, Woking and the surrounding villages. Further information about our coach service and routes is available on our School Coach Service page.
Each year, the ratio of applicants to places is approximately 3 to 1. However, many girls apply to multiple schools. Over half of the 11+ places offered go to girls joining from external schools, with the remainder going to pupils moving up to the Senior School from our Prep School.
11+ class sizes: teaching classes – up to 24 girls; pastoral Form groups are typically between 18-22 girls.
Approximately half of external candidate offers go to girls attending local state schools, reflecting our desire to identify girls who have the academic potential to succeed and flourish at Tormead over the coming years. We also have girls joining Tormead from a significant number of preparatory schools in the wider Guildford and south London area.
Assessments for Reception take place in November. Girls are welcomed into our Reception classroom and invited to take part in a series of simple tasks, enabling our staff to observe how they interact with others and respond in an informal classroom setting.
Candidates for entry into Years 1-6 are invited into the Prep School for their entrance assessments in January. Girls visit for a school day and are assessed in English, Mathematics and Reasoning, as well as an informal interview with a teacher. In addition to assessments, your daughter will also join current pupils in lessons, break time and lunch, providing her with an opportunity to experience everyday school life at Tormead.
As part of the assessment, we will contact your daughter’s current school, nursery or play group, to request a brief confidential report about her.
** Please note: the entrance assessments and dates for 11+ 2022 Entry have altered for this year, and differ from the information below. Please check the ‘How to Apply, Senior’ page for more details.**
Each January, registered candidates are invited to Tormead to sit two one-hour papers in English and Mathematics. As these papers are set by Tormead, we do not provide copies of past papers to schools or families. In addition, girls are invited for an entrance interview, enabling us to explore their creativity and curiosity.
Prior to the assessments, we will write to your daughter’s current school for references, requesting information on her academic progress, potential and other talents. Decisions to offer a place are made following a review of the entrance examinations results, the interview and references.
Extra time in the entrance examinations is not provided for girls with special educational needs. Where candidates have an educational psychologist’s report, we request that it is sent to us along with the Registration Form so that it can be reviewed by our Head of Learning Support to ensure that the appropriate level of support could be provided if a place was offered.
We do not encourage tutoring and it should not be necessary as our examination papers are set in line with National Curriculum expectations. We do not provide copies of past papers or any further information beyond what is provided here.
Academic Scholarships are available at Year 3 (7+), to both current Pre-Prep pupils and external applicants.
External candidates will be invited to sit 7+ Entry tests in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning, along with current pupils, in early January.
Girls who display scholarship attributes will be invited for an interview Thursday 13 January 2022 with the Head of the Prep School and the Director of Studies. Interviews will last for 25 minutes and will focus on activities using Critical Thinking skills.
Scholarships are available to girls entering Tormead at 11+ and are worth 10% of the termly school fees.
At 11+ we offer Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sports Scholarships. There are no separate Academic Scholarship papers or interviews and so everyone sitting the 11+ Entrance Examination is automatically considered for these scholarships.
Details for how to apply for the 11+ Art, Drama, Music and Sports Scholarships are sent to all registered candidates along with their examination pack in late October. In addition to the 10% reduction in termly fees, Music Scholarships include the cost of instrument tuition in a principal instrument and also any instrument on our endangered instrument list, provided that tuition is taken at Tormead.
Further information about scholarships can be found on our Scholarships and Bursaries page.
The current schedule of fees can be found on our Fees page.
Each year we offer a number of means-tested Entrance Bursaries to girls joining Year 7 and Lower Sixth (Year 12). These can vary in size from 10% to 100% of the school fees.
For further information on deadlines and how to apply for a bursary, please visit our Scholarships and Bursaries page. Guidance can be downloaded here: Guidance and Application Process for Entrance Bursaries 2022-2023. Alternatively email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are always delighted when siblings join Tormead as it helps to add to the friendly-family ethos of the school. To support this, we offer a third daughter discount whereby two-thirds of the term’s tuition fees will be charged for the third and subsequent daughters of a family, all of whom are in attendance at one and the same time.
However, every girl is different and Tormead may be the right school for one child but not necessarily for another. Therefore, all girls are assessed on their own individual merits, regardless of siblings in attendance, to ensure that they will thrive at Tormead.
We are happy to accept applications from overseas students prior to their arrival in the UK and, where necessary, can arrange for their Entrance Assessments to be taken at their current school. However, Tormead is not accredited to sponsor Tier 4 visa applications for students.
Those wishing to apply for a place whilst still overseas should contact the Registrar, Mrs Melanie Hobdey, on email@example.com.
