We were honoured to have Fiona Thompson deliver a Beacon lecture to our academic scholars on 25^th February. Fiona is the Global Senior Legal Director at Colt Services and gave our pupils a glimpse into the world of data centres and her own career background. Fiona always knew she wanted to work as a lawyer but after studying for her LLB at Exeter University and LPC at Cardiff, she took an all-important year out to travel around North America. Fiona explained how data centres house computer systems, servers and networking equipment in order to store, process and distribute data. Every 60 seconds more than 3.8 million searches are conducted on Google, more than 65,000 photos are uploaded to Instagram, and more than 243,000 photos are uploaded to Facebook – which illustrates just how important data centres can be.
