We adhere to the National Curriculum and National Primary Frameworks for English and Mathematics but also teach beyond these frameworks. The girls are exposed to a variety of learning techniques which encourage them to be self-motivated and independent learners. Application of understanding is adopted through a cross-curricular approach.
The subjects taught are:
Latin (from Year 5)
Spanish (from Year 5)
Personal, Social and Health Education
Thinking and Learning
Games, Gymnastics and Dance
Girls in Year 5 and 6 are placed into teaching sets for English and Mathematics. From Year 3 upwards the girls are taught by specialist language, Music and P.E. teachers and, as the girls progress through the school, they are increasingly taught by Senior School staff.
In order to enhance and enrich their learning, the girls enjoy a variety of educational visits and workshops. Additionally, Year 5 travel back in time to the Tudor Era at Hooke Court, near Beaminster, where they are fully immersed in activities which lead to a deeper understanding of what life was like for Tudors. The highlight of the trip is our Tudor Banquet!
Year 6 spend a week at Brenscombe, one of Dorset’s leading outdoor education centres. There, the girls are encouraged to take part in a well-balanced and varied programme of activities which include walking along the coast, team building games, bush craft, as well as the more adventurous challenges of ropes courses, rifle shooting, canoeing in Poole’s natural harbour and abseiling the sea cliffs of Swanage.
