Last Friday we were fortunate enough to welcome Laura Bates to Tormead to talk to the Sixth Form as part of the Horizons programme. A feminist writer and activist, Laura Bates is the founder of the Everyday Sexism Project and author of Men Who Hate Women and Everyday Sexism, exploring the normalised misogyny within society. Her candid and informative presentation on systemic sexism and the sexualisation of women in the workplace created an open atmosphere and encouraged the Sixth Form students to share their own experiences and questions. Through approaching often restricted subjects and discussing how to challenge instances of casual sexism, we were all inspired and empowered to address the issue head on, both in small and wide-reaching ways, in our everyday lives.
