Lucy, Lower Sixth, Wins Prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship

Tormead is delighted to announce that Lucy in the Lower Sixth has been awarded a prestigious national Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, sponsored by the Royal Navy.

This is particularly exciting as the Royal Navy offers many unique opportunities to their sponsored scholars to see the work of engineers first-hand. Lucy has long been interested in a career in engineering and this award confirms our belief in her potential to be a leader in that profession.

This brings the total number of Tormead girls who have won an Arkwright Scholarship to eight, over the past five years. Applications are open now; any Year 11 girl interested in a career in engineering should contact Mr Wilkinson (Head of Physics) or Mr Braun (Head of Design & Technology).

About the Arkwright Engineering Scholarships
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships programme inspires and nurtures future leaders in engineering. The programme tackles its aim by awarding engineering scholarships to high-calibre students to support them through their A Levels and Scottish Advanced Highers. Since 1991, Arkwright has awarded nearly 6,000 engineering scholarships. Arkwright also awards a small number of undergraduate scholarships each year, available exclusively to existing Arkwright A Level scholars.

Scholars are selected for their potential as future engineering leaders by assessing their academic, practical and leadership skills in engineering disciplines. These are gauged through a rigorous selection process comprising an assessed application form including a teacher’s reference, a two-hour problem-solving aptitude exam and a university-based interview.

The scholarships support students through their Sixth Form studies and encourages them into top universities or higher apprenticeships. The scholarships consist of an annual financial award to each scholar and to his/her school, and enrichment activities such as mentoring and industry visits that enhance a scholar’s experience of engineering in a real-world context. Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are highly regarded by university admission tutors and industry recruiters and are one of the most prestigious accolades that a talented sixth form student can receive. The scholarships are supported by more than 150 different sponsoring organisations: commercial and industrial companies, industry regulators, government organisations, universities, professional institutions, trade associations, training boards, livery companies, the Armed Forces, charitable trusts, personal donors and schools.
