Cindi Pretorius

Deputy Head of Prep

What does your role as Deputy Head involve?

“There are so many aspects to my role as Deputy Head of the Prep school, and it would be difficult to name each one. Every day is unique and comes with its own individual challenges. Whether you are welcoming the pupils into school in the morning, supporting pupils in times of need, arranging the logistics of the day-to-day running of the school, teaching new and exciting skills or simply just being a person in a room to provide support, the roles and responsibilities are endless yet so rewarding.”

How long have you been at Tormead?

“I started teaching here at Tormead in January 2022.”

Best (and worst) bits of the job?

“The best part of my job is seeing happy children, engaged in their learning, being inquisitive and making the most of every day. Tormead pupils have the most amazing ability of finding the joy and laughter in every lesson. I thoroughly enjoy seeing pupils achieve and experience their ‘Aaaaah…. now I get it’ moments. On days where things may not necessarily be going to plan, it takes just one smile, one little comment made by a child to completely turn your day around and makes me love my job even more.

The worst part of my job is seeing how quickly children grow up and having to say goodbye at the end of every school year as they move on to new adventures in Senior School. However, this too is also one of the greatest gifts in being part of their learning adventure and seeing them grow and achieve.”

What makes you most proud of working here?

“The ‘strong women’ ethos and the real sense of unity and family, where each pupil is treated as a unique individual working towards achieving their full potential.”

Memorable moment?

“This would have to be the Years 3-6 International Women’s Day dress project. This dress not only represents diversity, individuality, beauty and success but is also an encouragement to our girls to be who and what they want to be in life. With confidence, we are unstoppable and stand together, united as powerful and successful women who strive to achieve.”

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be?

“I find this question really hard to answer as I honestly don’t know the answer. However, it would have to be a job involving children as I could not picture my life any other way…maybe a nanny or childminder… ”
