Martin Holford

Music Department, Year 7 Tutor & Physics Teacher

What is the Music Department’s philosophy?

“All pupils interested in music are valued – whatever ability or style, enabling girls to take part as soloists, in ensemble, vocal, orchestral or instrumental; within pop, classical, jazz and music theatre genres.”

What do you most enjoy about your role?

“It’s always a joy to see pupils take a step forward as they grasp a topic or take intellectual risks.”

How do you help girls integrate into Senior School?

“September’s Y7 residential trip helps everyone socialise. Playing fun games during form time is also crucial.”

What makes you most proud about working here?

“The special relationship of trust between pupils and staff means relaxed lessons. The girls care about their school and their learning.”

Memorable moments?

“Directing our choirs at Choral Evensong in a great cathedral (or on BBC Radio 4) – I’m passionate about English choral traditions and Tormead girls rise to the highest singing standards.”
