Year 7 Gamelan Workshop

On Wednesday 22nd January, all Year 7 pupils took part in a fun music workshop about our current topic – Indonesian Gamelan. Gamelan is a percussion orchestra made up of a variety of different Indonesian instruments. In our workshop, we had the opportunity to learn about these instruments and had a go at playing them. We learnt as a group the Balungan (core melody) of a piece of Gamelan music and then we were able to put it in different parts with all of our different instruments. We also found out about the different types of Gamelan and how they vary from island to island. For example, in Bali they call the instruments different names to what they are  called in Java. Overall, the workshop was a really fun, interesting and exciting experience for us and gave us a great chance to explore Indonesian culture and broaden our understanding of our current music topic.
