New Sixth Form Centre
A beautiful new Sixth Form facility with state-of-the-art learning and social spaces
Our new Sixth Form Centre opened in September 2022, and sees an expansion of the existing Sixth Form facilities to include a new common room and café, lecture and teaching spaces, dedicated study, collaboration and social spaces, all designed to bridge the gap between secondary education and university.
The design of the new Sixth Form Centre has been achieved in consultation with both our current Sixth Formers and Year 11 students.
New learning and social spaces, echo the environments of higher education institutions, preparing our Sixth Formers for a seamless transition between school and university study.

Learning Spaces
Quiet Study Zone
Based on feedback from our Sixth Formers and with a focus on the neurodiversity of our community, we wanted to provide a range of environments for our senior students to study in. In this area, the emphasis is on quiet or silent working, with a lower ceiling, acoustically treated wall panelling and library-style tables with power sockets for laptops and iPads. An excellent area to conduct some research for an EPQ or revise for an upcoming test.
Dedicated Teaching Spaces
We wanted the experience of being a Tormead Sixth Former to feel different from previous years in secondary school. Part of this is recognising that teaching styles at A Level can differ significantly from GCSE study and require dedicated teaching spaces. Our new Sixth Form centre has a variety of different teaching spaces that will be used only for A Level studies, particularly those subjects only offered at A Level.
Versatile Lecture Space
This is the area where we are keenest to seek our current students’ views on how it will look and work in the final design. The brief was to create a flexible space that can be used for lecture-style teaching, different types of activities within the same lesson and even as an exhibition space. We feel our new lecture theatre achieves all these goals, and more.
Collaborative Study Space
An area of collaborative and group study, acknowledging that learning is not always an independent, or indeed a silent activity. This space, chosen for the high degree of natural light, is perfectly placed to provide an inspiring setting for project work and collaborative learning.
Acoustic Study Pods
An area for (undisturbed) group study, acknowledging that learning is not always an independent, or indeed a silent activity. This space provides the perfect setting for project work and collaborative learning.
A warm and inviting series of social spaces, expanding the concept of a common room, with a new café, more seating, balconies to enjoy the summer sun and cosy acoustic pods to share a coffee with friends.

Common Room Café
A fabulous, new Sixth Form café at the heart of the common room, serving a range of hot drinks, sandwiches, fruit and snacks.
The Lounge
The Lounge is a highly versatile space that is both a unique teaching room and social area. With sofas and armchairs it doesn’t look like a traditional classroom but is an innovative environment for discursive lessons, debating and reading. At break and lunchtimes it doubles as a quieter social space for students who prefer time away from the hubbub of the common room. This relaxation space has been developed with our Sixth Formers entirely in mind.
Acoustic seating pods
We have designed two seating zones with different types of sound-reducing pods, including several equipped with flat screen monitors, that can be used by Sixth Formers for group collaboration and project work.
University style teaching spaces provide comfortable and productive places to learn, collaborate and debate.

Sixth Form Tower
A complete refurbishment of the main staircase provides an entirely dedicated, modern and inspiring entrance into the new Sixth Form Centre, directly from the Horse Shoe Lawn.
Improved circulation
A complete refurbishment of the corridors and circulation areas within the Sixth Form centre will bring in plenty of natural light, making us of acoustic, noise reducing materials and natural, calming tones.
UCAS & Careers
The new Sixth Form Centre will also be the home to a dedicated UCAS and Careers Office, providing Sixth Form students with careers and university advice, resources and support. Alongside this, they will have complete access to Tormead’s alumnae network, as we help support our students in their path beyond Tormead.
Pastoral Support Office
It is only right that this new design brings our Sixth Formers and their pastoral support team, together. With the removal of existing walls and the addition of large portions of glazing, the new Sixth Form pastoral office will be brought into the common room area.
Sixth Form is a time of unparalleled growth, fun and hard work! Our aim is to foster intellectual curiosity and engagement with academic work, educating girls for life beyond Sixth Form while simultaneously providing more independence and freedom to manage their own time.
