At Tormead Prep, sport, physical activity, and exercise are central to school life, even from the earliest years. Through our diverse and engaging curricular and co-curricular programmes, we support our pupils in taking their first steps on their sporting journey. Our goal is to unlock a passion for sport from an early age, helping children develop as physically literate and enthusiastic performers. With inspiring teaching and tailored coaching, we are dedicated to nurturing each child, guiding them to discover the joy of movement, build confidence, and lay the foundation for a lifelong love of physical activity.
Tormead Sport operates as a whole-school department, providing Prep School pupils with access to high-quality PE teachers and sports professionals who deliver our comprehensive co-curricular sports programme, as well as curriculum PE, Games, and weekly swimming.
The Prep School offers a diverse range of co-curricular sports clubs, ensuring every pupil can find activities they enjoy.
In Pre-Prep, pupils participate in sports clubs such as ball skills, coordination, fundamental movement skills, and gymnastics, all designed to develop the skills, understanding, and enjoyment fostered in their curriculum lessons. From Years 3 to 6, the programme expands to include weekly sessions in athletics, cricket, dance, football, gymnastics, hockey, netball, swimming, and tennis at different points throughout the year.
Beginning in Year 3, we also offer a wide range of competitive opportunities for all abilities as part of our co-curricular programme. Sports teams regularly compete in mid-week inter-school friendly matches, as well as county, regional, and national competitions, with sports tours available for older pupils in Year 6.
All fixtures and competitions are inclusive and open to all pupils committed to our club’s programme. Additionally, all pupils have access to a range of competitive inter-school and intra-school House competitions in all our major sports.
Our sports fixtures and events calendar can be found here.
At Tormead Prep, our dedication to Physical Education is reflected in the ample time allocated to PE and Games. Pupils from Reception to Year 4 benefit from 2 hours and 30 minutes of curriculum sports and physical activity each week, while Years 5 and 6 enjoy 3 hours per week.
This allocation significantly exceeds the government guideline of 2 hours per week, highlighting our commitment to providing ample opportunities for physical activity and development.
We follow a physical literacy and fundamental movement skills curriculum, particularly in Pre-Prep and Years 3 and 4. Our aim is to equip pupils with the necessary movement and motor skills, enabling them to feel confident and competent in their physical performance. This is achieved through a variety of 6-week units centred around agility, balance, coordination, speed, core strength, ball skills, and game sense. Our approach not only focuses on developing core skills and movements but also emphasises the broader holistic benefits of physical activity, such as reflection, evaluation, oracy, teamwork, problem-solving, and more.
By Years 5 and 6, our extended Games afternoons further promote the development of team sports and activities such as cricket, football, hockey, and netball. These Games afternoons are also dedicated to inter- and intra-school fixtures, providing pupils with opportunities to develop their skills and foster a sense of belonging through teamwork. Additionally, these sessions offer designated time for cricket, hockey, and netball squad players to prepare for county and IAPS competitions.
At Tormead, every pupil, regardless of their sporting ambition, experience, or ability, has the opportunity to develop a love for sport and physical activity.
