Yvette Hughes

Head of Learning Support

How do you help pupils overcome challenges?

“We help girls overcome challenges – by identifying needs, arranging initial assessments and specialist lessons. We also advise teachers, work with examinations officers, and liaise with everyone.”

What’s the overall philosophy of the learning support team?

“Tormead is an inclusive school, committed to offering every girl an equal opportunity through a wide range of academic and extracurricular activities, to become an effective leaner who maximises her potential.

How does this work at a practical level?

“A minority of girls have more challenges in learning as a result of disabilities and learning difficulties. The school aims to ensure that all girls with Special Educational Needs have their needs identified to support academic progression and good physical health and wellbeing.”

What’s the most rewarding part of your role?

“Helping a girl understand that, while her “different wiring” may make academic life challenging, there are strategies to achieve success and fulfil potential. Then observing that success!”
