Tormead debating teams excel at the Rotary Youth Speaks Debating Competition

On the 24th March Tormead entered an intermediate team of Year 8 pupils and a senior team of Sixth Formers, into the first round of the Rotary Youth Speaks Debating Competition. Competing against teams from St Catherine’s, Guildford High School and, in the senior section, Godalming College, both teams did extremely well.

In the intermediate round, our Tormead team of Bea, Twisha and Elana, won the section overall with a motion entitled, ‘This House would give up meat to help save the planet’. In addition to taking the first place, Elana was also awarded best Opposition Speaker across all the intermediate teams.

In the strong senior section, our team of Ellie, Charlotte and Tina did extremely well, arguing the motion, ‘This House would introduce a universal basic income in the UK’. Ellie was awarded best Chair of the senior section and Charlotte, best Proposition Speaker.

Unfortunately there are no regional follow-on rounds this year, but both teams are keen to return next year when, the Rotary organisation hopes the competition will run to its full national schedule after a two year break.

For both teams this was their first formal debating competition, making the many plaudits awarded, all the more impressive.
