Year 9 Battlefields Trip

From 19 – 20 October, Year 9 went to Belgium and France to observe and study the Western Front battlefields and the logistics, soldiers and equipment used in WW1. This was a follow up to what we have been learning this term. With action-packed days and amazing guides, the girls got the best out of this trip. Arriving in Belgium by coach and ferry, Year 9 saw some old cemeteries including the Tyne Cot cemetery as well as a museum and model trenches that were life size and immersive.

On the second day, Year 9 headed over to France and visited the site of the Battle of the Somme to see the now fields of the old war ground; it was an incredible experience. We also had a workshop where the girls were allowed to hold a firearm, try on the gas mask prototypes and see a real uniform. There were stops at cemeteries as well where the graves of relatives of some of the Year 9 girls were found. From seeing uniforms to walking amongst moving memorials, I would definitely recommend anyone in future years to go on this trip.
