Journey to the top of the world

Tormead celebrated World Book Day on Thursday 6th March by welcoming author, explorer, mountaineer and film-maker Matt Dickinson. Students and staff alike were captivated as he took us on a journey up to the top of Mount Everest, recounting tales from his own expedition in riveting detail. Matt also led a creative writing workshop for Lower School students, and signed copies of his ‘Mortal Chaos’ books and his brand-new thriller ‘The Everest Files’.

Matt’s adventurous nature and interest in mountains was triggered by a love of reading as a boy. Since then, he has combined his love of adventure and literature by both pursuing adventures and writing many stories based upon his experiences.

“World Book Day is a fantastic celebration and for us authors it is a great excuse to get out there and talk about our work!” said Matt. “This visit to Tormead School has been a real pleasure: the girls have listened very carefully and asked a lot of probing questions about Mount Everest! The creative writing session was a lot of fun: there are some budding authors at the school!”

Finally, Sixth Formers demonstrated their love of books by transforming themselves into some of their favourite book characters: the creativity and flair of their costumes was impressive!
